Had an interesting conversation tonight that started with a man telling me, "Good luck with your future plans! You're up against one big obstacle: opera is a thing of the past."
You can imagine how that turned out.
Suffice to say that I believe there is plenty of evidence to show that younger audiences are indeed growing, that the Met and others are cultivating the future audiences of opera, that opera remains relevant and vibrant as an art form and a vital expression for us as human beings, and that the fate of opera rests in the hands of the artists who decide when, where, and how to present it and make it accessible and inviting to others.
I'll step off my soapbox before I get too wordy. Always interesting to get a spicy conversation starter, though.
