Lovely day

It was a truly lovely day here, weather-wise and otherwise. My voice lesson was very focused and delightful. I'm learning how to break some habits that have been getting in my way as I sing. For instance, I tend to rock back on my heels when I take a breath, a way of trying to make sure I stay loose. However, the actual effect is to create tension in my spine and back and throw off alignment - not a good thing when your body is your instrument. My professor's suggestions were incredibly helpful, and I'm learning how to think about the arches of my feet instead.

Voice teachers are truly Renaissance people. They need to know anatomy and physiology, history, languages and diction, and, of course, vocal technique and pedagogy. I feel very, very blessed to be around so many good teachers here. It is a place rich with resources.

Tomorrow is a coaching with one of the opera faculty in the morning, a meeting regarding my departmental assistantship, a theory class, and an opera workshop. Tomorrow night, I'm auditioning for the soprano soloist position in the Mozart Requiem. Wish me luck!
