Monday night, I attended our department's "Departmental Voice Recital". About 16 of the 100+ voice students sang over the course of the hour. They were in one of the best halls here, and that is such a joyful experience. Being in a wonderful acoustical space makes such a difference in your energy as you perform. (At least for me it does.)
Each person sang one or two pieces in a very fast fashion. What I love about this is that it really does integrate music into daily life. Much of the experience here is geared to make performing feel natural and frequent. We sing in studio class and opera workshop. We audition for choral concert solos. We sing in lessons and in the hallways. And there's no big deal made of any of it. What a gift.
The pieces on the recital ranged from Spanish, French, German, and Italian art songs to a bit of opera to one musical theatre selection. The guy who sang the musical theatre piece performed a number from Pal Joey. He looks like he's about 19 or 20, but his baritone voice is a rich and beautiful 35-40 year old's instrument (in the good sense, not in the fatigued sense.) He really reminded me of the excellent musicians I've seen on Broadway, like Brian Stokes Mitchell.
The expression people exuded, the polish and poise, and the genuine love of it was so neat to see. Most people were still a bit nervous, but it was a controlled nerves.
I'm so, so excited to be here among such wonderful musicians!!
